FOP Issues: The Economy
March 23, 2009
To all Friends of PERA: We need your help!
A coordinated effort to push the legislature into taking some action with Colorado PERA is underway on several fronts.
A joint hearing of the House & Senate Education Committee will held on Wednesday, March 25, at 7:30 a.m. in the Capitol room 0112. What is the subject? K-12 Pension Reform.
We have learned that the presenters before the committee will be CU professor Barry Poulson, author of What Now For PERA? Déjà vu All Over Again? and UCD professor Michael Mannino, author of Understanding the Need for Pension Reform for K-12 Employees. Both reports are published by the Independence Institute. Both reports basically say that Colorado public employees should be moved to defined contribution plans.
We need to be there! And in great numbers! Bring your friends. We cannot let the legislators or these anti-PERA theorists think we do not care!
Here is some background:
- Last week during the Legislative Audit Committee three Republican house members met with the PERA CEO and called for a special committee to investigate PERA.
- The Denver Daily News (free paper) reports “Legislators want action” on PERA.
- Last Friday, the Independence Institute hosted a meeting for teachers about pension reform featuring Dr. Michael Mannino, who is a professor at UCD Business School.
- Barry Poulson, CU economics professor, issued a new paper on the need to change PERA.
Yes...it's early but it's important!
